Message: Happy New Year to Everyone I am seeking some assistance/advice on how to go about and getting home care for our son. His condition is worsening and we need to start the process on getting some type of Home care assistance. The assistance that we are looking for currently is for a person that is qualified to be able to come into our home and watch him for a few hours if we need run errands, etc. He needs assitance getting around the house, going to bathroom, etc. Where do I start? Thanks for any advice you all may have.

Message: Robin, I am sure it all depends on which state you are in. I can only tell you about IL where we live and have had home care for our girls for over 15 years. I would think that you should call your local Department of Human Services or Public aid services. I think each state has some different names for their offices. We were able to get the state of IL to pay for people to come to our home and watch the girls while we work. If you are only wanting someone so you can get out of the house, you maybe talking about respite. But I would still check out your state's services or check with the school counselor. Keep calling agencies till you find one to help. Also, if you call Amy in the BDSRA office, I believe she is trying to keep up with most of the states's services and maybe able to help you.
Hope this helps.

Message: In Maryland Arc helps with respite time Its not income base but they dont give you much. Nick receives 40 hours a year. They allow us to use the funds for his summer camp at Maryland school for the blind. He is still ok and we really dont need it at this point but where told to keep active on the list or funds might not be there when he does need it. You may also ask about rolling access funds. Most places receive funds 2 times per year so if you miss the date you may have to wait until the next cycle. makes no sense to me but then again who asked for sense when dealing with Government. Oh yeah be prepared to disclose EVERYTHING from past to present. They ask some of the oddest questions at times. Sometimes they will allow you to pay a family or friend to keep the child and get paid for it. Its not much but it helps. They may have to wait a month for pay though. hope this helps

Message: We have a home health aid who comes in for 2 hours twice a day.She helps with her care, light housework, and watches her so I can run errands. She is a God-send. She comes to us through a local agency but after going through several girls, I chose her so I did have some say in it. Sarah has SSI and medicaid. Getting the help wasn't difficult, her Dr. wrote a prescription which he submitted to Sarah's caseworker/insurance, and they approved it. If you don't have medicaid, I am assuming your Dr. could submit the request to your insurance. I hope this helps.

Message: I agree with Sue.When Hilly started getting bad we were at a loss, but our Dr. arranged for someone to come out and do her blood draws which led us to getting full time nursing for her which has been a godsend. She has private insurance which wont cover nursing and then mediciad through SSI which will cover it.
Get your Dr to write a RX for it and submit it to what ever insurance you have.
When Hilly got out of the hospital in Dec. we went from 10 hours a day to 24 hour care because of her needs and now we are at 16 hours.
We can accept or decline any nurse they send out for her(and we have sent a few away).
