Message: Hi everyone! Hope you all enjoyed your holiday!
I have a question about weight gain. It seems with this disease, I have read that gaining weight is a problem with many of our children. We have the opposite problem. My son, Nicholas, has gained 12 lbs in the last month and a half and I am very concerned. He is short on breath and walking up the stairs completely wears him out. We have not changed his meds except to up one by only a small amount. He has had prloblems with weight gain in the past, but we discontinued one of his meds and he bagan loosing the weight again, now all of a sudden he is going back up, quickly!
Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jill Wellner

Message: Clifford has been gaining weight fairly steadily since getting on depakote. We changed from regular depakote to the ER kind in November but he still seems to be gaining too much.
I'm worried because depakote seems to be working well for him otherwise and I really don't want to change it but we may have to. He is only four feet seven inches and weighs over 120 pounds.

Message: That is so strange, Nicholas (JNCL) is 16 and also takes Depakote (sprinkles) and is losing weight pretty quickly. I think it may be his metabolism or age spurt, but we are really worried about him. We do Ensure and are going to start Protein Powder.
I didn't realize that Depakote could make them gain weight.

Message: Jacob has been on Depakote for over 1 1/2 yrs and a max dose for his age/size. He has not had any weight gain on this. He is 98% G-tube fed though but the Depakote has not changed his metabolism. He recently started taking resperidone and the Dr. said that could increase his weight even though he is tube fed. This has not happened yet.

Message: Thank you everyone for your input. Nicholas has not had any seizure activity yet, so he is not on Depakote. A few years back he was on Rispirdal which caused great weight gain over a long period of time. We eventually took him off it and he slowly lost some of the weight and then tappered off. It has been a long time since he was on this and has been on all his current meds for a good amount of time that, I'm assuming, wouldn't suggest the rapid gain is related to meds? He has a doc appointment tomorrow - I will report back if there is anything we find out!
Thanks again for everyones suggestions!
