Subject: When Speech Leaves Name: Deborah Applegate Date Posted: Nov 16, 08 - 9:47 PM Email: Click here to Email Message: Most of you remember me posting about a month ago when my son lost the abililty to speak. I remember one day telling him we would find a way to just hang in there.
Well.......I didn't, but his teachers have found a way. We are using a notebook. Yes and No are on the outside and on the inside are tactical items (i.e. bathroom, t.v., food, drink) that he can touch to tell me what he needs. If I ask a question, he can point to yes or no.
This hasn't solved the problem, but has certainly helped both of our dispositions, especially my son's. He knows everyone is working to communicate with him. He has embraced the tactical notebook.
Just wanted to share the information for all. Might help others too.

It is a device where she can record her own voice saying things like, "Yes", "No", "Water", "Bathroom", "Tired", etc. Each word had a button with something she can feel so she knows which is which. Sara is mostly blind now. They think this will help when she can no longer communicate. I don't know, but it helps sometimes now, too. She doesn't get as frustrated. Good luck! Ask your teachers/OT about this.
