Message: Hello Everyone,
My son Carl (12) has recently started changing his behavior... He use to love watching/listening to movies... Now his attention span with his favorite movies is less than 5 minutes. He wants to be with me constantly. He doesn't want to play with his building blocks or trucks any more (which he use to live for).. He just wants to be anywhere I am.... Which is fine, but it just makes me sad that he doesn't "play" anymore. He has also started pinching alot when being guided to & from places. Have any of you gone thru phases like this???
Thank you

Message: Clifford, age 11 JNCL did go through a similar phase although he did not get physical at that time. He was not having seizures but his EEG showed some abnormalities so he was gearing up for seizures. At any rate he became more impulsive and had sleep issues too. This occurred gradually over a year or year and a half. He got so impulsive I was afraid he would get injured or killed because he once tried to run in front of a car.
About this time too he started having short term memory issues so we thought it was time for another EEG. This time there was seizure activity. So we he went on depakote. We also saw a child psychiatrist for the hyper active impulsive symptoms and he went on seroquel. He was like a totally different kid once these meds kicked in. He was like his old self before he became symptomatic. He started playing with toys again. Was able to sit at watch his favorite programs and was able to sleep normally.
Now that he is older he has started having more behaviour issues *however* he is able to maintain his ability to play and enjoy his toys and watch his favorite shows. Before it was like he was uncomfortable in his own skin. Now he is comfortable even if he doesn't always say the appropriate thing or keep his hands to himself.
Long story short I would look into seizure activity and possibly consider psychiatric meds if you haven't already. My goal is for Clifford to enjoy his life as much as possible. When I saw him stop doing things I knew he really liked I wanted to find a way for him to get that back. He was 8 at the time we started these meds.

Message: Thank you for the info Corrina, Carl has been on Depakote since January and we've been having to increase his dose because of seizures. I will talk to his Neurologist about adding another med... To see if that helps. Thanks again
