Message: I have appointment with thomas' doctor on Monday morning and we are going to talk about different sleep meds. Right now he is taking 20 MG of ambien. Sometimes it works and sometimes not. It usually takes him 45 minutes to fall asleep but he only sleeps for 4 hours and then is up.
I am going to mention to the doc:
restoril
Seroquel
Diazepam
Thanks in advance for your help.

Message: Hi Stephanie. Nicholas has always had difficutly sleeping or staying asleep. We have tried many different meds and the one that has worked the best is the over-the-counter drug Melatonin. The recommended dose is 1 pill - 3mg's but Nicholas takes 2 pills. He konks out about 20 min. after he takes it and usually stays asleep all night. I also like the fact that he has been taking it for a long time now and still is working without needing to up the dose.
Hope this helps,

Message: Before Clifford started having seizures we put him on a sleep med. We tried melatonin but it didn't kep him asleep, just helped him to fall asleep faster. He was only sleeping about two hours a night. I wish I could remember the sleep med he was on, but I can't. He took it for a year. It did help him to sleep several hours in a row, about 6 but that was it. During that year he got increasingly hyper and impulsive. We decided to see a psychiatrist and she said that sometimes sleep meds have that affect on kids.
He was also having abscence siezures at that time so he started taking both depakote and seroquel. He usually sleeps about 8 hours now and when he does wake up he can get back to sleep fairly easily.
One good thing about trying melatonin first is that it is a natural product. So, I would definately say its worth a try.

Message: Hi. When my son Chris (LINCL) began having trouble sleeping, we were told to try Melatonin. it worked for the most part. If you decide to try it, talk to the pharmacist to make sure you get the slow release one. It releases the ingredients slowly to help him sleep through the night vs. rapid release which may only help with falling asleep faster. We never had to resort to any prescriptions and, as someone else wrote, we didn't need to up the dosage after a long period either. Good luck.
