Tiffany has been getting more bruises on here arms and legs than usual and here school keeps questioning me about them. She can't walk far, but when she is at home she can walk a few steps. The only problem is that she falls sometimes and this only adds to her bruises. Just want to ask if anyone else has faced this problem and is it common in children with Battens?
Thanks for any help,
Rinaldo

Depending on what medication tiffany is on bruising may increase. Nick was put on Depakote and his bruising has increase, due to the lowering of the clotting factor. Check with your doctor or call Nancy Carney and see what she says.

I talked to Tiffany's neurologist and she also said it could be the Depakote. We have an appointment on August 11th and Dr. Maller is sending her for blood work before that to make sure it's that and not something else. Thanks for the help.

Our Nicholas is having this too. He is on Depakote, but it is working really well for his seizures. I think where his bruising is from hitting himself with his toys repeatedly.

Bruises have been par for the course for us. Because of balance problems he always has bruises. The school doesn't seem to be questioning as much anymore with the diagnosis but they were for awhile and it was a major pain. But I think that they did get worse with Depakote being added but it's worth it for what it does for him.

Jacob has a lot of bruising too. In fact, my husband and I were just recently talking about how many he currently has. Some are pretty decent size. He too is on Depakote and I know that has caused his patelets to be really low. Jacob is still very mobile but does fall frequently or hits himself.

Yes, my son is getting the bruising from his wrist splints, leg braces. On his pressure spots. I believe it is from his meds.. topamax, banzel & tranxene.

well I see the post about buising and one is already up that is misleading and I apologize I didn't write it about my son some one else did. My son has been bruising for along time. He had a test done at age 4 to see if he had a conditon that easy bleeders have. I can't remember the name of it but I will find out and post. The test came back negative. But at age 8 he was diagnosed with Batten's Disease. He had not been taking Depakote during the first of this bruising problem. He was about 2 when the bruising started and he was about 6-7 when he started the depakote. I would blame it on alot of other things like his clumsiness, his behavior to hurt himself, him being sick alot with other health issues, & possibly lack of vitamins and other things you need to function. The reason why I say the lack of vitamins and such is because he was such a picky eater since he was born. He would hardly eat and what he did eat was not much and not always had all the vitamins and things he probably needed. He would not eat any veg. unless it was potatoes or corn. he would only eat in the fruit part of his diet bananas and apples. he didn't like bread. he didn't like anything with flavor. not alot of sugar or salt or spices and never gravy. He didn't like certain textures of food. he only ate chicken, hot dogs, tuna, veinna sausage, eggs, cheese, and some box stove top stuff like stuffing and mac and cheese and it was so hard to get him to eat. I know that lack of certain vitamins causes break down from the inside of the skin out which causes bruising. then with all the clumsiness he had several bruises all over his body. then not to mention getting sick all the time he had a bit of a pale skin tone so then the bruises looked horriable. so I hope this helps but I guess we really dont know all we can do is dig for an answer.....Good luck
