We're interested in any ideas/tactics that families have used to get their children to take medicine.
Our Daughter Elizabeth (JNCL - 11 yrs old) takes a big dose of Keppra 2 times a day along with Lamictal. Taking the Lamictal pills isn't too difficult because she can chew them and they don't taste bad (and we can disguise it easily in other food), but the liquid Keppra has a strong taste that she dislikes (even though it is flavored). The pill form of Keppra isn't chewable and she won't swallow a normal pill.
What do you do when physically they are still able to take by mouth, but mentally they aren't coherent enough to cooperate?

My son is on Keppra, pill form, and we crush it and dissolve it with a bit of water. We give it to him in his feeding tube. I was just thinking maybe you could crush it and add it to a juice or something she likes to drink. the amount of water we use is only about a teasthingy, if that.

Hi, we tried the liquid but could not get my son to take it like your daughter no matter what I mixed it in. So the doctor just upped his lamictal which is in pill and I put his pills in caramel and I have also heard of people using jelly.

We would use applesauce, yogurt, ice cream. Anything they like just a sthingyfull. This worked for a long time until he no longer took anything by mouth.

We used Keppra for years. It was a great drug for our daughter. We used it in pill form, crushed it, and sprinkled it over a teasthingy full of yoghurt (usually). Ice cream worked well too! Liquids never went down well in our house. Good luck!

Pudding is good because it is a little thicker and wraps around the pills well. That an applesauce as suggested.

hello! at one time we could disovle the pills in water and use a syringe to get pills down--go on the side of the cheek--this also is good to use when it is hard to get liquids in--Peg

we use anything and everything...always changing it daily...ketchup, applesauce, OJ, choc milk...I will admit we have had to tip him back and squirt it in the back of his throat before to. Whatever works.

I do applesauce and in the mornings, I put sprinkles and crushed pills on Mary Payton's oatmeal, which really works like a charm. The consistency is great and she doesn't even realize I am doing it. The liquid is a little harder. I just squirt it in there and hold her mouth closed until she swallows. Not always very nice, but pretty effective
