My son Jacob, age 6 (unspecified NCL) has had a lot of behavior issues that have gotten worse over the past yr along with some of the progression we have seen. We see a behavior specialist who is trying very hard to help us. It took a while but we broke down and put him on Risperidol. It seemed to do nothing despite messing with the dose. Through talking with Jacob's Neuro and Lance, Seroquel was mentioned as a possibility. We weened him from the Risperidol. He was on nothing for a few days. This morning he started 1/2 of a 25 mg pill to be taken only once daily. He was given this about 7:30 am. He was asleep on the living room floor before 10 am. Since he was near me, I was able to keep a closer eye on him. I turned my back and he was in quite a different position. I then saw him stiffen his body and make chewing movements followed by some leg jerks (but those jerks are also typical during his sleep). He awoke about 15 minutes later and was very out of it. He soon began to speak but moved slower than his typical slow. He is in afternoon Kindergarten and a note came home that he was very tired, unsteady (which has been getting worse). When he got home from school, he could barely stay awake for his tube feeding and then fell asleep (he is still sleeping nearly two hours later). I have read the side effects but is it possible that a low dose of 12 mg can do this? We have already been questioning his seizures increasing again and aleady has a VEEG scheduled. I should note that he took a nap after school yesterday, went to bed and fell asleep normal time. That was prior to the drug. I have a call in to the Neuro but still waiting to hear from them.
